LEARN How To LEARN
We empower students by mentoring their comprehensive development skills to become independent learners.
“Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf, is welcoming me."
Matthew 18:5
“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I will learn”.
Benjamin Franklin
“If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn."
Ignacio Estrada
"Throughout my career, I have been dedicated to learning as much about my students as possible, so I can support their specific learning styles and needs."
Alicia holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in Educational Psychology and Math Education. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Special Education with an endorsement(concentration) in Learning Disabilities from Spring Arbor University. In addition. She's certified as an Orton-Gillingham based reading tutor and has a Singapore Math certification.

Her educational career has been diverse and deeply rewarding. She has taught Middle School Math, Spanish (it's her first language) as well as Third Grade. She also home-schooled several of her own children and worked as a reading tutor for students with dyslexia. She then transitioned to Special Education and worked as a learning specialist in a K-8 elementary school system.

I had the honor of having Alicia McCoy work with my son for approximately six years. She changed his life, and mine. She consistently went above and beyond to tailor our private school’s rigorous curriculum to my son's needs, ensuring that he not only understood the material but also felt confident in applying it. Her patience was admirable. Her expertise, and personalized approach allowed my son's grades to not only improve significantly, but more importantly, his enthusiasm for learning soared. I highly recommend Alicia to any parent seeking a knowledgeable and compassionate tutor who display patience and a true desire to see you child succeed.

Our family with 8 kids was privileged enough to work with Alicia McCoy twice over the course of our children's education. When I first met with her at Parent-Teacher-Conferences when my third child was in her third grade class I was blown away at how well this teacher of 25+ kids knew my daughter. She understood her strengths and weaknesses as a student and knew so much about her! While our daughter didn't require specialized help, I remember well how great Alicia was with a boy in her class who was on the spectrum and clearly dealing with behavioral issues. She was patient, kind and went out of her way to make sure he knew he was safe and cared for in her classroom. Her kindness and patience not only served that young man as a teacher but also provided an example of how to treat people who are "different" to the other students in the class and I can still remember the impression that kindness made on my 9-year-old daughter at the time.

Fast forward to our 7th child and a little over a decade later, Mrs. McCoy was no longer a classroom teacher but the Resource Specialist at the school. Alicia was instrumental in nudging us to get a neuro-psychological assessment done so we could address our daughter's significant reading and math delays and subsequent ADHD diagnosis. Alicia worked with her every day in school and by the end of second grade, her math and reading skills had greatly improved. On top of getting the help she needed, meeting with Mrs. McCoy became our daughter's favorite part of the school day. Alicia truly gets to know her students and finds out what motivates them and provides the tools and rewards that made getting "special help" fun and meaningful instead of something that made kids feel awkward or "less than." Additionally, when we ended up having to leave that school mid-year, Mrs. McCoy went out of her way to put together a specialized math packet for our daughter so that we wouldn't lose traction while we homeschooled her for the remainder of second grade. My daughter is now in 4th grade at another school and has more than caught up in reading (she's actually at/above grade level ~ especially in vocabulary) and she has learned methods to help her overcome her processing delays in math that she still remembers and utilizes from working with Alicia two years ago.
Alicia McCoy truly changed our children's lives for the better ~ one as a bright, articulate third grader and another as an ADHD-diagnosed, processing-delayed, struggling second grader. In both cases, Alicia brought her common sense approach along with her kindness, professionalism, generosity of spirit and breadth and depth of experience with kids from all backgrounds, to determine what made our kids unique, how they would learn best and took the time to find out what motivated them and provided a personalized approach. She is wonderful in both a group and one-on-one setting and I cannot say enough good things about her. Anyone who works with Mrs. McCoy has hit the jackpot and will be thanking their lucky stars for having crossed paths with this invested, thoughtful educator!

My oldest son struggled with ADHD for many years in school. Having Alicia come in and teach my son was a game changer for his confidence and learning abilities. Having her on your team is having someone who will never give up on your child. She truly loves teaching and seeing your child succeed. So grateful for her gifts.

Alicia McCoy was an extraordinary teacher for several of my children for many years. She demonstrated remarkable dedication and passion in her teaching and I am so grateful for the positive impact she had on my children’s learning. One of my children had learning challenges and Alicia’s creative and interactive way of tutoring made him understand and master academic concepts with ease that led him to become an honors student in high school and is now college bound.
Alicia is extremely organized and her lessons are meticulous in detail. She creates a stimulating and inclusive learning environment to meet all her students diverse needs. She truly connects with each student and believes in each student’s potential to thrive. Under her guidance, my children and many others developed a love for learning and academic success. She is an exceptional educator.
